6/25/2023 0 Comments Benjamin franklin walter isaacson![]() ![]() He may also have been, as the great literary historian Carl Van Doren has flatly declared, "the best writer in America" during his lifetime. More than making himself merely "tolerable," he became the most popular writer in colonial America. ![]() "But I sometimes had the pleasure," he recalled, "of fancying that in certain particulars of small import I had been lucky enough to improve the method or the language, and this encouraged me to think that I might possibly in time come to be a tolerable English writer, of which I was extremely ambitious." When he found his own version wanting, he would correct it. Sometimes he would even turn the notes into poetry, which helped him expand his vocabulary by forcing him to search for words with the right rhythm or rhyme, before trying to recreate what Addison and Steele had written. He would read the essays of Joseph Addison and Richard Steele in The Spectator, the irreverent London daily that flourished in 1711-12, take notes, jumble them up, set them aside, and then return to them a few days later to see how well he could replicate the original. ![]() When he was a young teenager working as an apprentice at his brother's printing shop in Boston, Benjamin Franklin, America's original apostle of self improvement, devised a wonderful little method to teach himself how to be a powerful and persuasive writer. ![]() 6/25/2023 0 Comments Rock by anyta sunday![]() Trent keeps his life in separate zones to avoid a short circuit. ![]() Being gay in the construction industry isn’t easy, nor is being father to his two young adopted children. Grohl’s childhood was a typical 1970s, American-suburban childhood in Virginia, complete with BB guns, fishing trips, and plenty of injuries. After the breakup, Grohl realized that his true love in life is music and that he did not need Sandi or anyone else as long as he had his guitar. Next, Grohl recounts a memory of Sandi, the first girl he fell in love with and who broke his heart. As an adolescent, he was introduced to punk music through his cousin and a Naked Raygun concert, and immediately developed an interest in the musical genre. He recalls how his mother took him to a local jazz club, and it was there that he first became inspired to play music himself. Grohl sees himself in his daughter’s passion and also remembers the way his mother helped him first discover music Grohl emphasizes the circular nature of life and how traits like a passion for music seem to be passed on from generation to generation. His memoir begins with an anecdote about his daughter, Harper, who desperately wants to learn to play drums. ![]() Grohl’s memoir follows a loose, chronological timeline, maintaining a thread from his youth to the present while drawing parallels between memories and experiences of the distant past with those that have occurred recently.
