The lean years of their partnership are filled with the kind of Rocky-esque anecdotes you expect from combat sports, but that seem somehow novel when they involve St-Pierre, who occasionally gives off the impression of being born into his current lifestyle. The book’s best section recounts the teenaged St-Pierre’s early training with infamous Montreal martial artist Kristof Midoux. There’s the origin story (the bullied son of a karate black belt), the development episodes (the broke kid gym-hopping between Montreal and New York) and the arch nemeses (the two Matts: Hughes and Serra, are given the space their victories deserve, while more minor foes such as Dan Hardy and Thiago Alves net exactly zero mentions each).
